Initial impression - high quality unit, but lacking some features

We heat and cool our house with window units and space heaters, as we do not have central air of any kind. We keep planning to put it in, but the large one-time expense keeps making us push it off. We have resigned ourselves to continuing our room-based heating and air-conditioning and started looking for units that were higher quality and more feature-rich than those at the local big Orange and Blue home improvement stores.I settled on the 2012 Friedrich Kuhl line, because the brand has a reputation for building quality units, and they also offered wifi integration, meaning you have the ability to control and program the unit via the web. They also offer the ability to link multiple Kuhl units together to act as sort of poor-man's central AC and heat.Here are my initial impressions so far:PROs:- This unit offers both heating and cooling and plugs into a normal 115 volt plug.- The unit has a heavy-duty look and feel, and appears to be solidly engineered and constructed, although only time will tell.- Physical installation is easy because the interior unit slides out of the housing, then you mount the housing, then lift the actual mechanism and slide it into place. This means you aren't having to balance a large, heavy, unwieldy AC unit while you race to securely attach it before it falls out of your window. This configuration is normal on the larger AC units, and it's nice of Friedrich to also use that paradigm in this smaller unit.- The unit runs quietly, for a window unit air conditioner. Meaning, you get a low level of white noise, but it is very quiet as the compressor cycles, and much quieter than any of our other units.- It cools and heats great.- Controlling and programming the unit via the web is easy, although there are some drawbacks noted in the 'CONs' below.- Friedrich offers different replaceable colored front cover kits, so you don't have to live with 'Government Office Putty' as your only choice.CONs:- The USB port that is used to enable the wifi access is hidden, such that I eventually had to lay on the floor and look up in order to properly connect the necessary cables. At first I thought I had bricked (killed) the unit because it went dead during the wifi enablement process, but it was a badly connected USB cable. Note that this bullet point is a dry recitation of the facts, and in reality this issue caused hours/days of confusion, frustration, support calls, and rage. :) However, once I got the cable sorted, the wifi enablement was straightforward.- If it hadn't have been for another reviewer's comment, I would not have known that I needed to purchase the installation kit separately. For some reason Friedrich does not supply the installation kit for their units that include heat. I cannot for the life of me figure out why they would do something that ridiculous, but be warned that you need to order the "Friedrich KWIKQ window installation kit for Kuhl+ series - Q chassis models" if you plan to install this unit in a window.- Similarly, to enable the wifi capabilities you have to purchase a separate item, specifically the "Friedrich KWIFI wi-fi kit for all Kuhl & Kuhl+ series models". My take is that for the higher price Friedrich is already charging for these units, the wifi should be included/integrated and they should not be nickel and dime-ing us for another $20 for wifi.- For all their intelligence, these units cannot switch from cool to heat on their own, it has to be done manually. I live in Central Texas, where we don't have a 'cooling' and 'heating' season. We need cooling almost year round, but also sometimes need the heat to kick on. The good news is that I can switch the units heating and cooling via the web in an emergency, but I'd rather have the unit simply keep my house comfortable without needing me to tell it to heat or cool.- When using the front panel, one of the settings for Fan Speed is 'Auto', meaning that the fan speed will increase and decrease as necessary to maintain the temperature setting in the room. This is great for us, because we can have significant temperature fluctuations in each room, depending on the position and angle of the sun, the nature of changing weather, etc. HOWEVER, when you set up the unit via its ability to be programmed (make it cooler overnight for sleeping, make it warmer during the day when we don't use the bedroom much, etc) the only fan speed options are low, medium, and high. So, if I choose the have the unit run on a programmed basis, I can't have the fan speed be automatic. This is a ludicrous oversight. I am hopeful that they'll eventually fix it, but who knows, and I found this to be the biggest negative for this supposedly advanced unit.- The unit extends about 4 inches into the room, meaning that the face of it is not flush with the window or even with the front edge of the trimwork around the window. It extends a good four inches into the room, meaning that you can't put a table or couch or bed or anything there unless you're willing to have it be 4-5" away from the wall.So, the bottom line is that compared to all the other window units we have had, this one clearly ranks as the best we have owned. However, it also costs roughly double what similar units would have cost, and the 'advanced' features seem to be incomplete, hence me taking away a star.Over time I plan to come back and update this review to note longevity and also report any changes/improvements in the tech functionality. However, in spite of the less-than-perfect technology, I still highly recommend this unit.

I cannot review as your ad did not indicate that I would need an exterior mounting bracket to install the unit. As Amazon does not sell the bracket, I had to buy it elsewhere and am awaiting delivery.
